Birds are an essential part of our environment and play vital roles in our city’s ecosystems. Unfortunately, millions of birds are injured or killed in collisions with buildings and other structures across Canada each year. The City aims to address this issue through the Bird-Safe Design Guidelines.
These design guidelines will be used during the planning stages of public and private developments to avoid or reduce design features which put birds at risk. Glass treatments, changes in lighting and designing landscaping to reduce the risk of collisions are all possible bird-safe design features. I support these guidelines and the action being taken to protect our bird population.
The staff report will be presented at Planning Committee on Tuesday, November 10. You can access the staff report and supporting documents online here.
