Parks and Recreation Facilities Master Plan: public consultation
The Recreation, Cultural and Facility Services department is developing a Parks and Recreation
Facilities Master Plan (PRFMP), in support of the new Official Plan (OP). Ottawa residents are being
invited to share their knowledge and experiences to help us plan for the future of municipal parks and
recreation facilities.
The first phase of the PRFMP public consultations was recently launched on Engage Ottawa. The
objectives of the public consultations are to collect information on residents’ usage and satisfaction
with the number and locations of existing parks and recreation facilities, to learn about gaps and
barriers that exist, and to identify trends and emerging needs in park and facility use. The feedback
from public consultations will be useful in understanding and accurately reflecting emerging needs in
our community and developing recommendations to Council.
The PRFMP will make recommendations for each of the eight geographic areas of focus within OP;
(downtown, inner urban, outer urban, greenbelt, suburban [east, south, west] and rural). This includes
new development areas as well as existing communities.
We want to hear from residents, community associations, sports organizations, homebuilders,
residents interested in accessibility, equity and diversity and other partners and user groups. Targeted
stakeholder outreach with school boards, colleges and universities and the Nation Capital Commission
(NCC) are also planned.
Though this consultation is being promoted through several channels, we encourage you to promote
this opportunity to as many residents and groups as possible. Please consider promoting in your
newsletter, on social media or webpages.
This round of public consultation includes:
• The launch of two online surveys on Engage Ottawa:
o Parks and Outdoor Recreation Facilities survey: open from January 11 – February 21,
2021;
o Indoor Recreation Facilities survey: open from January 29 – March 12, 2021; and
• A series of six facilitated online consultation sessions over a ten-day period between February
17 and 25, 2021. Residents, community groups and sports clubs are encouraged to attend a
date and time that works best for them out of the below six sessions.
