The City is considering a tax on vacant residential units with the goal to report to Council by the end of June 2021. A vacant home tax aims to increase the housing supply by encouraging homeowners to sell or rent their unoccupied home – and, if they choose to continue to keep the home vacant, a tax is levied. This revenue can then be used to fund affordable housing projects.
The City has created a survey on the Engage Ottawa website to gather residents' feedback on a potential vacant unit tax. Residents will have from February 22 until the survey closes on March 31 to provide feedback.
